readme.txt date: 04/2003 Sphinx Logon Manager - Notes on First Installations and Updates =============================================================== For smart cards: Sphinx Logon Manager works with PC/SC compatible smart card readers. These readers either connect to the USB or serial port of a computer. (To install the card reader and driver refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the card reader you are using.) For RF/proximity cards: Sphinx Logon Manager can be used with USB or serial RF card readers. Drivers for HID/Indala compatible PcProx readers are automatically installed with Sphinx Logon Manager setup. - Start Sphinx Logon Manager setup program. - Follow the instructions of the setup program. - Reboot computer, if prompted. First Installations ------------------- Before you can use Sphinx Logon Manager on your computer, you need to perform the following steps: A - Install Card Reader * When used with Smart Card Readers: Ensure that a PC/SC compatible smart card reader is installed on your computer and that the unit is functioning properly. * When used with Proximity Card Readers: Ensure that a Sphinx compatible RF card reader is attached to your computer. See also "Proximity Reader Install Notes" below. B - Compatible Cards You can run Sphinx in demo mode without a reader or card. For full installations or if you would like to operate Sphinx in demo mode that requires a card reader and card, you must have a Sphinx Logon Manager smart card or Sphinx-compatible proximity card If the reader or card you would like to use with Sphinx is not listed, please contact Securetech (email: support@securetech-corp.com). C - Install Sphinx Logon Manager Software. The software can be installed either from a CD or from the Internet download site, as described above. Follow the instructions of the Quick Install guide to setup your logon information and save it to the Sphinx program. Update an existing Installation ------------------------------- Before installing a new version or major update of Sphinx Logon Manager, you must completely un-install the previously installed version. To do that, do the following: - In the Sphinx Logon Manager program, under "Options"/"Settings", un-select the "Logon to Windows" option. - Save information to smart card. - Exit Sphinx Logon Manager and reboot. - After manually logging on to Windows, go to the Windows Control Panel and select "Add/Remove Programs" - Click on the "Sphinx Logon Manager" entry and remove it completely with all its dependent components. - Reboot, if prompted. - Install new setup and follow instructions on screen. Above steps are necessary, since Sphinx Logon Manager controls Windows Logon functions. These components are locked during a session which has been initiated by Sphinx and can't be overwritten. Thus you must first logon manually before uninstalling and updating Sphinx. Proximity Reader Install Notes: ------------------------------- 1. pcProx USB: If Windows prompts you to install a driver for a new USB Human Interface Device, use your original Windows CD as prompted by Windows to install. 2. Generic Serial (ST JSDI01): The driver for this reader is pre- configured in the Sphinx software for serial port COM1. If you have more than one COM port and your COM1 port is already occupied, you can change the driver COM port configuration in "C:\Program Files\Sphinx LogonManager/sphinx_genericserial.ini" file as follows: 1. Find each "ReaderDef block" with reader type "ST JSD1". 2. In each of these blocks, change "com1" to "com2". 3. Save the updated file. 4. Before you open Sphinx program, change the "Sphinx Reader Config." to "RF Generic Serial".
